Verde Recreo have started building the artificial turf pitch for the MOD in Corsham, near Bath. We are excited to be working for Laing O'Rourke who are the main contractor on this large capital project. The pitch is 97.4m x 63m and will be surfaced with a 24mm sand filled grass.
The project brief comprises of the provision of an artificial turf pitch, to complement the new accommodation and office facilities being constructed for the MOD by Laing O'Rourke. The requirement is for a multi sport pitch with floodlighting and perimeter fencing. The pitch is locatedĀ below high voltage overhead power lines which has created a number of challenges. We have designed a bespoke floodlighting system to provide the best light levels possible given the restricted number of poles (4 instead of 6) and a working height restriction of 6m has meant the development of a safe system of work for all elements of the construction phase. The project will be completed in 12 weeks.
Start on site. We installed the perimeter carrier drain and half of the laterals. The formation was trimmed and we began to cover it with stone, to protect it in case the weather turned wet.
More digging this week, we installed the roots and cables for the floodlights, finished the drainage and imported more stone sub-base.
We laid nearly 600m of kerbs this week, and completed the initial stone blanket. It's good to be out of the ground while the weather is still dry.
The laser controlled dozer pushed the final layer of stone over the pitch, and trimmed it to a fine tolerance. The groundworks for this project are now completed.
With the stone complete, the fencing team moved in and began installing the fence posts. Our floodlight gang had the lights built, erected and wired by Wednesday.
Now the floodlights are up, we called in the tarmacers. The single layer macdam to the pitch was completed by Tuesday, despite the tipping restrictions below the overhead cables. The fencing is ongoing.
The fencers had a clear run this week and completed the 358 panels and the installation of the kickboards. The job is on programme and ready for the shock pad team to start after the Bank Holiday.
A wet start to the week, meant the pressure was on to get the shock pad finished in time for the carpet delivery, next Tuesday. The team worked into the evenings and managed to finish everything by Saturday morning.
The carpet arrived from Holland on Tuesday. We began rolling out straight away and by Friday nearly all the pitch was green.
We rolled out the rest of the carpet this week and glued all the seams up. We were then able to cut out the markings for the hockey 'd's and the football boxes.
Just perfect weather for sanding a carpet. The infill has flown in and by the end of today, the pitch will be fully groomed up.
